What is BMI and why does it matter?
BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a simple calculation using your height and weight. It’s a quick way to see if you’re in a healthy weight range for your height. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) both use BMI as a screening tool for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
BMI Categories: Underweight: <18.5 | Normal: 18.5–24.9 | Overweight: 25–29.9 | Obesity: 30+. These numbers are just a guide. BMI doesn’t know if you’re a bodybuilder or a couch potato, so don’t take it as gospel.
What about BMR and TDEE?
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories your body needs to function at rest. It’s the baseline for your daily calorie needs. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is your BMR multiplied by your activity level. If you want to lose, maintain, or gain weight, knowing your TDEE is key.
